If you’ve been following our YouTube channel, you’ll know our mobile servicing has really taken off. In this post, we’ll cover how to tell when your BMW i3 is due for a service, how to read its digital service history, and the one crucial step to make sure your record stays clean and complete after your next service.
When Is Your BMW Service Due?
Every time you start the car, a service reminder briefly appears in the instrument cluster. Press the Start/Stop button with your foot on the brake to see the preview date. The colour indicates urgency:
- White – Not due yet
- Orange – Approaching due date
- Red – Overdue
You can also check remotely in the My BMW app (under Vehicle Status → Service Requirements) as long as your car is paired. This view is a convenient summary, but for the full picture you should use iDrive.
How to View Your Full Service History in iDrive
On your iDrive menu, go to:
Vehicle Status → Service Requirements → Service History
Here you’ll see a breakdown of the date, dealer code, and tasks performed for each entry. The layout differs slightly between pre-facelift and LCI i3s, but the logic is the same.
Decoding Dealer Codes
- BMW main dealers → unique numeric code
- Independent BMW specialists (like Wisely Automotive) →
00000 - Third-party OBD entries → brand name/text instead of numbers (often out of chronological order)
When your car next syncs with BMW’s servers (e.g., after we update your record via the official system), unofficial OBD entries can disappear and the chronology will correct itself.
What the Icons and Colours Mean
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ✅ Green | All service items completed on time |
| 🟠 Orange | Completed, but at least one item was late |
| ❗ Exclamation mark | At least one item was overdue or missed |
Service status indicators within the digital history
The Hidden Catch: The “Inspection” (MOT) Reminder
BMW’s menu shows two distinct things:
- Routine servicing – brake fluid, vehicle check, and (for i3 REx) oil change
- Inspection/MOT reminder – a date-based notification you can reset yourself in iDrive
The inspection reminder is not part of the service schedule. On newer BMWs/MINIs the labels and icons differ slightly, which can add confusion. Prefer it off? It can be toggled in BMW’s official ISTA diagnostic system (we can do this during a visit).
Update the Inspection Date Before Your Service
If the inspection/MOT reminder is overdue when we log your fresh service, BMW’s system can flag the history with an exclamation mark even though we completed the real service tasks.
Prevent this in three steps:
- Open Service Requirements in iDrive.
- Find Inspection/MOT reminder.
- Set the date correctly (ideally into the future).
Sync tip: It can take hours (sometimes a full day) for this update to propagate across the key and vehicle. Do it at least 24 hours before your appointment.
What Counts as “On Time” (BMW’s Definition)
BMW considers a service “on time” if it’s completed within 70 days from the start of the due month. For example, if due in mid-April, you technically have until mid-June before it’s marked late.
For electric BMWs with long intervals, we’re pragmatic: a slightly late service isn’t a big deal as long as it’s performed correctly and the history is updated properly.
Key Takeaways
- Check due dates in iDrive or the My BMW app.
- Understand: Inspection/MOT is separate from actual service tasks.
- Update the inspection date before your booking to avoid the exclamation mark.
- Dealer codes: BMW = numeric, Independent = 00000, Third-party OBD = brand text.
- BMW’s “on time” allows a buffer of up to 70 days from the start of the due month.

BMW i3 Servicing – Quick FAQ
Does an independent service show up in my BMW i3’s digital history?
Yes. Independent specialists with official BMW access (like us) can write to your digital history. Entries will display dealer code 00000.
Why did a past service entry disappear?
Non-official OBD entries can vanish after the car resyncs with BMW’s servers during an official update, restoring the true chronology.
Can I disable the inspection/MOT reminder?
Yes. It can be toggled in ISTA. We can switch it off (or re-enable it) during your appointment.
